About Joseph

Joe Okon represents corporate clients in matters involving premises liability, administrative house discrimination claims, first- and third-party insurance claims,  and insurance bad faith. Joe is experienced in litigating cases from pleadings through summary judgment and trial.

  • Drafted the summary judgment motion, appellate briefing, and opposition brief to Petition for Writ of Certiorari concerning a choice of law dispute and arguing insured was not entitled to any coverage due to out-of-state law allowing setting offs, and further arguing insurer client did not waive enforcing the setoff provision, nor was it estopped from doing so. The Colorado Court of Appeals affirmed the district court’s granting of the summary judgment motion, which later resulted in the Colorado Supreme Court denying the Writ of Certiorari, affirming the dismissal in the insurer client’s favor.
  • Obtained voluntary dismissals, as well as other favorable outcomes and settlements following depositions, in depth investigation and discovery, and summary judgment motions.
  • Obtained dismissal of negligence claims on behalf of Fortune 500 client on a Rule 12(b)(5) Motion
  • Successfully defended a variety of housing discrimination complaints filed with the Colorado Civil Rights Division United State Department of Housing and Urban Development.
  • Obtained a jury verdict in favor of a client-state agency at trial regarding a Title VII employment discrimination claim.
  • Achieved defense verdicts for clients in U.S. District Court concerning claims pursuant to 42 U.S.C. § 1983.
  • Obtained summary judgment resulting in dismissal of all claims in a retaliation and religious freedom infringement case, later affirmed on appeal.
  • Oversaw and assisted with large-scale ESI review and production, including formation of ESI protocol and managing review of documents.

Before moving to Colorado, Joe gained significant trial experience working at the Illinois Attorney General’s Office on civil rights litigation brought against employees and entities of the State of Illinois. Joe has tried federal civil rights cases to verdict in both the Central and Southern Districts of Illinois.

Joe earned two bachelor degrees from Southern Illinois University and was a member and team captain of the collegiate football program. Thereafter, Joe earned his law degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law.

When not working, Joe enjoys skiing, camping, mountain biking, hiking with his dog, Rosie, and enjoying everything Colorado has to offer.
